귀엽다....

내용은 귀여운 것은 아님에도 불구하고 흐름이 귀엽다.

오빠야들이 별로 좋아하지는 않을 것 같다. 우리의 여자 주인공의 지배적인 감정 표현과 갈등이 이 책을 쭈욱 끌어가는 견인차 역할을 하는데... 책을 내려놓을 것 같다. ㅎㅎㅎ 나도 그럴뻔 했다. 푸하하하하..

 

그리고... 우리 작가선생님 매우 열심히 많은 것을 담아내려고 했다. 욕심쟁이~~후후후훗.

Donut와 Torus. 시간여행. 고로 [When You Reach Me]에 대한 언급이 많아지고.

별자리... 여러가지 요소들을 넣어주는데... 솔직히 좀 산만한 느낌? 애를 쓴다는 느낌이 들었으니 자연스럽지만은 않았다.

 

흠냐... 스토리로 들어가보자.

 

Ruby Pepperdine

12살. 6학년 소녀.

 

이 이야기의 중심에는

Bunning Day Pardade.(실존하지 않는단다)

할머니 Gigi의 죽음.

Lucy와 Nero와의 우정.

 

이모든 것이 얽혀있다.

 

귀엽다... 그런데 기발하지는 않다.

그렇다고 엔딩이 흡족하지도 않고...

 

버뜨 그러나 읽어볼만 하며 요즘 블로거들 사이에 오르내리는 책 중의 하나인 이유가 있다.

대체적으로 이 책과 [The Thing about Luck]가 비교되며 편이 나뉘는 형세이다. 나는.... The Thing about Luck의 손을 들어주고 싶다.

 

책에서 찾은 lead들... 이 책의 주제는 무엇일꼬?

"Listen." The voice was wilder, louder. "It's all coming together." In between the words there was a gasping sound - "It's all (gasp) coming (gasp) -"

할머니가 병을 앓으면서 점점 쇠약해지시진다. 마지막이 멀지 않았을때... Ruby를 잡고 하시는 유언과 같은 말씀이다. 그런데... Ruby는 어른들이 하듯이 그저 약때문이라면서 할머니의 말에 귀 기울이지를 않았다. 그저... It's all coming together! 이 사건 이후로 급격히 나빠지셔서 돌아가시고 마는데... 이 일로 죄책감으로 이 말의 뜻을, 그날 할머니가 하시고자 한 말씀을 쫓기 시작하며 다시 시간을 되돌려서라도 모든 일들이 원래대로 일어나기를 바랄뿐.

 

"That's homeomorphism. The shape can stretch, but it keeps certain properties - it's still a tube-y, torus kind of thing."

 

"I'm listening. I'm listening, Gigi. I am sorry, I am so sorry I didn't listen before. I was scared. Maybe. I didn't know."

 

"You're supposed to be my best friend" - you might not be able to stop yourself from saying what you've been thinking all afternoon.

"What if there is no supposed to?"

......

"I'm not supposed to be your best friend. I am your best friend. I choose to be your friend. Because I like you. Because you like me.

 

"Tell me again what your wish was," Lucy says.

"I wished that I could go back and fix things - that I could do what I was supposed to have done and listen to Gigi and know what she wanted to say and what she meant and that our last conversation wasn't me not listening."

 

이책의 핵심이 아닐까나?

 

But most of the time, she will think that there really isn't a supposed to at all. That all she can do is her best at any particular moment. And that sometimes that will lead to things feeling great, and sometimes it will not. And that is as supposed to as it gets.

 

 

역시 여러개의 책들이 소개되는데...

[When You Reach Me] Rebecca Stead

[Holes] Louis Sachar

 

워낙에 말하고자 하는 것이 많았던터라... 하나만 해도 될법한데... 그렇지 않아도 꽉찬 이야기 속에  이책 저책을 들고 나오니 들러리 역할만 해준다. 조금은 아쉬운 부분.

 

블로거들이 관심을 갖는 이유도 알겠고 작가도 맛깔스럽게 이야기를 엮는 것도 사실이다.

이상하게 이 책도 [The Thing about Luck]과 비슷하게 엔딩이 아쉽다.

그만큼 두 책 모두 어려운 인생의 숙제를 다루기 때문일 것이라 생각된다.

해답이 없는 인생에 대한 질문과 오픈 엔딩을 제시하며 더 많은 독자의 참여를 독려하는 것일까?

 

매우 비슷하면서도 각자의 개성을 뽐내는 이 두책~ 좋으면서도 아쉬움을 남긴다...

 

그런데... 결정적으로 우리집 남자아이들이 읽을까 싶다...흠...흠...
