개인적으로 손에 꼽는 작가이다. 

[Tuck Everlasting], [Kneenock Rise]와 같은 명작들을 내놓은 작가. 

어린이들을 상대로 심오한 주제들을 책으로 쓴다는 사명을 가지신 분 같다. 

하여튼... 이책은 2012년 가장 최근작이다. 

살짝 [Goody Hall]의 느낌을 풍긴다. 주제도 완전히 거리가 멀지는 않지만 좀더 아이들을 향한 이야기이다. 주로 70년대에 왕성한 작품활동을 한 그녀. 

이제는 팔순을 넘기신 완숙미를 자랑하신다. 허나 그녀가 한창 잘 나가던 40대에 쓴 명작들이 더 도발적이고, 날카롭고 많은 질문들을 던져준다.

그녀가 몇개의 작품들을 더 내놓을지는 모르겠으나 그녀가 살아 오면서  말하고 싶은 것이 이 책의 주제일까? 

High Street.

어디를 가나 이런 곳이 있다. 

어느 도시에나 동네나... 

하물며 깡촌 시골에도..

깔끔하고 웅장함을 고스란히 전달해주는 부촌의 거리 High Street

너와는 분명히 다르고 상관도 없고 다른 세상이야! 라고 부르짖는 그런 곳. 

여기에 사는 Mr. Boulderwall. 

그리고 Joe라는 소년이 있다. 부모를 잃고 할머니와 사는 Joe는 이모를 방문하기 위해 Midville에 온다. 그다지 기대하지도 오고 싶지도 않았지만 생각보다 이모 Myra, 이모의 친구 Vinnie, 그리고 이웃에 사는 또래 여자아이 Beatrice를 만나면서 편해지는 Joe. 

사실 High Street에 사는 Mr. Boulderwall과 Joe의 상관없는 세상은 우연하게 스치게 되는데 Mr. Boulderwall 의 엉뚱한 발상으로부터 적극 꼬이기 시작한다.  

사실... 조금은 뻔한 이야기이고... 그래도 뭔가 있겠지 하는 마음이 있었지만 상당히 교훈적인 이야기로 마무리가 된다. 

이 세상에는 돈 보다 중요한 것이 많다는 교훈? 

Aunt Myra와 Joe의 대화중 Joe가 왜 달에 대해 그토록 관심을 갖냐고 했을때... 달은 변하지 않기 때문에...항상 그 자리에 있기 때문에. 사랑하는 사람을 잃은 기억이 있는 이모가 사람들은 떠난다고...항상 곁에 있을거라 생각하면 안된다고 했을때 Joe의 말이다. 

"Gran says, he told her, when it comes to people, you can't count on anyone but yourself. But the thing is, I think you can always count on the moon. For it to be there, I mean. Sure, it changes, but the changes are always the same." 

Mr. Boulderwall의 제안에 대해 상의를 하는 Joe에게 하는 Vinnie의 조언: 

"There's nuthin' wrong with money, all by itself. It just lies around stacked up in the bank. It can't make ya smart if yer dumb, and it can't keep ya straight if ya feel like cheatin'. Sure, everyone's gotta have some. But, kid, if ya wanna get rich, this could be one way t'do it. Ain't no real harm in it, far as I can see." 

그담에는 Beatrice에게 고민을 털어놓으니 Joe에게 해주는 말: 

"It is simpe, she told him. In spite of what anyone else has to say, it's your life you're talking about, Joe Casimir. Nobody else's. And you have to do what you really want to do with it. 

할머니가 결국 Mr. Boulderwall과 만나서 담판을 짓는데... 답답해 하면서 자기가 무슨 제안을 하는지 잘 생각해보라고 말하는 Mr. Boulderwall의 생각: 

"I'm talking about the best of everything for that boy! For the rest of his life, he'll have all the money anyone could want! Why, to be rich-it's the American dream! Everybody loves money! It's what everybody wants! Surely you must be aware of that! To be able to live in a place like High Street - why, it's ideal! It's perfection! Everyone that sees it wants it - or a place just like it. Why can't you understand? It doesn't come true for a lot of people, of course, a dream like that - but I can make it come true for your grandson with a simple snap of my fingers! He can manage my factory exactly the way I would myself - and in exchange, I can give him a perfect life! How you can turn your back on an offer like that is simply more than I can grasp!" 

Mr. Boulderwall에게 마지막으로 할머니가 일침을 가하는 모습: 

"... So I'll put it as simply as I can. My grandson is not for sale. Not now, not ever. He doesn't want to sit in an office every day for the rest of his life and run a business, never mind how good that business is or how much money you'd give him to do it. There are a lot of different dreams in America, Mr. Boulderwall, not just one. And Joe's dream is to learn things. Discover things. High Street could never be for him what it seems to be for you. His head is too full of questions, and they're not the kind of questions High Street can answer. He'll have to study hard for answers. He wants to study hard. There's a lot to be learned. Because, Mr. Boulderwall, he wants to reach up to the moon-yes-and he'll do it, too. But not to make money because of it, not to hold it in his hands. All he wants is to understand it-and protect it. No, my grandson is not for sale. And neither, by the way, is the moon. Goodbye." 

책의 마지막 paragraph:

"There's an endless future waiting. It doesn't belong to just a few of us; it belongs to everyone. And much of it can be happy if you're patient and wait your turn. It does go on forever, after all. It changes all the time, yes, but it doesn't go away; it's always there, even when you're not looking. Just like the love of money. Just like the moon."

과연.... 

우리는 Joe의 입장이 된다면 어떻게 했을까? 

안전성. 보장 받은 미래. 돈 그리고 쉬운 길! 

그리고 달의 상징. 

달은 미래이며, 꿈이며, 꾸준한 노력이다. 항상 그 자리를 지킨다. 

아이들의 미래가 예측할 수 없고 확실하지 않다는 부모의 불안에 할머니가 한마디 내뱉는 듯 싶다.

모든 것을 다 해주고 싶지? 미래를 다 포장해서 건네주고 싶지? 

하지만... 아이들에게 꿈을 주고 꾸준히 삶을 배우고 사랑하는 법을 알게 해주는 것이 가치 있다는 것이 아닐까? 

돈은 있다가도 없고... 사업은 성공을 하다가도 망하기 때문에..

우리 마음에 꿈이 사라진다면... 

우리가 바라보는 것이 미래가 아니고 그 순간의 돈이라면... 

도전적인 이야기이다. 나도 자유롭지 않은 그런...
